Team 2 were appointed to the design for the expansion and refurbishment of the Northside Macarthur Clinic, another in Ramsay Healthcare’s series of mental health facilities.
The pre-existing site included a 34 bed facility, comprising of 7 single bed rooms, 8 single bed rooms with shared ensuites, 16 beds in double rooms and 3 beds in a triple room, which provided both inpatient and day programs for most general mental health disorders.
The extension was conceived as a floating structure, designed to provide healing spaces with light filled corridors and generous internal courtyards. The ward extension has been conceived to provide a quiet, reflective environment for patients, increasing the hospitals total capacity to 48 beds.
The expansion aims to transform the existing Clinic into a facility which considers a more modern private health care model for best practice. With this in mind the extension includes a 23 bed ward extension and modifications to the existing ward, ensuring that all patients are provided with a private room, as opposed to the pre-existing shared facilities. In addition, patient support areas including 2 abundantly lit internal courtyards, staff support areas, and a new lift for improved accessibility will be included.
One of the major design considerations was that the existing facility had to remain operational throughout the construction period without the services provided being diminished. Considering practicality, OH&S and buildability, it was determined that the pre-existing roof could not be compromised. This led for the design of the new extension to be situated fractionally above the pitched roof of the western wing of the existing facility.
The extension work has now been completed, with the finished Clinic set to provide much needed mental health care to the area in accordance with best possible modern day practice.
